Even if I fail in the US, I want to make it a successful failure
Exclusive Interview with singer, Rain, who will be holding his concert in Sydney on the 14th.
In our 15 minutes interview, Rain repeated the words "Enter the US market" and "Best performance" etc -- words which he often uses -- more than 10 times. Journalists waiting for their interview slots were either observing this no-nonsense interview, or busy trying to capture some shots. With the Sydney concert just three days away, this journalist was fortunate to be able to locate out interview venue: a hotel crowded with groups of female fans at Double Bay.
"I intend to give the most wonderful stage to the "few" Sydney and Asian fans here. You can say this is a pre-event to heading towards a bigger stage." Rain admits he has yet to have enough to "walk out of Asia". He also said, "My performance is linked through a series of well-though choreographies. Even if the location may change, the stage will not undergo too much changes."
As of last year, Rain has been transitting through US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan for his world concert tour. China, Japan and US are also stops scheduled within his World Tour. What does Rain, who is now busy with his world concer tour, normally do in the plane?
"I conceptualise my next album and project, or listen to music. In preparation for my debut in the US, I'm also learning English. I'm not bored during my flights"
Rain is drifting from place to place in a plane with his promotion printed on it. Because of this, senior singer, Lee Seung Chol (known as the king of "LIVE" in Korea) said on a recent TV programme, "Among all the singers, I envy Rain the most".
"I exist to perform. It's my honour that a senior I like in the singing industry said those words. I consider myself a fortunate man being able to perform in different parts of the world."
As one of the first Korean singer to have a world concert tour, Rain said, "To me, it is still to early to label me as a 'World Star'. It is my dream to be worthy of this label when I make a successful debut in the US." "There are many dangerous factors and lackings in this world concert tour. Going thorugh these hurdles, I'll like to pave a smoother road for artistes to have their world concert tour in future."
A Shrewd CEO, A Successful Entrepreneur -- Rain in the next 10, 20 years.
Although exuding a high level of confidence, his tone suddenly became quiet and calm.
"I don't feel uneasy about my long period of absence in Korea. Because if I do my best for the next album, I will be warmly received. Otherwise, I will be harshly criticised. I may only get one of such chances in this life. If I give up this chance (to make a debut in the US) because I cannot bear to take my absence from the Korean market, I will regret it for the rest of my life," Rain said. Even if the US debut "is a failure, I want to make it a successful (glorious) failure". "If you hold tight to the sand in your fist, that sand will still escape and disappear through your fingers sooner or later. I want to try to grasp hold of a new fistful of sand, and take on a new challenge."
Rain said, "Touring the different countries like what I'm doing now may very well be the climax of my career as a singer". But then later, he changed his tone and added on "If I lead every single day of my life seriously, I should be able to enjoy the fruits of labour when I'm 50, 60 year old?" With regards to what he thinks he'll become in the next 10, 20 years, he said, "Hopefully a shrewd CEO and a successful entrepreneur. It'll be nice, even if it's not in the entertainment industry. So I intend to take time to learn about business management."
What are the songs you like to sing normally?
-- "Mona Lisa"*, "I only have you"* etc
In the previous interviews, Rain said before, "Even when I'm having a glass of soju, I'll be thinking, 'I really should spend this time practising. It's such a waste of time to spend it drinking'." "When I was a student, I thought studying was dry and boring. But practising my singing and dancing is something I love; something I find interesting and can rid of my straying thoughts. Because of this, I think a person should live on doing something he/she loves. This seems to be the way of life."
"Century Icon" Rain and 25-year-old Jung Jihoon. Doesn't he have any reminiscences about those pleasures in life which he has yet to enjoy?
"Perhaps some people will pity on how I'm already standing at the top at such a young age, unable to enjoy the joy and freedom of my age. But now, I just want to pour all my passion into my work."
He said, "Occasionally, I'll go to the Karaoke with good friends. I like to sing senior Cho Yong Pil's 'Come back, come back to Pusan habour'*, 'Mona Lisa'* and Senior Lee Seung Chol's 'I only have you"*.
When this journalist asked him, "Let's change our positions. If you're a journalist, what would you like to ask Rain?"
"Well, I have no special questions. I just have one thing to say, 'An article with misrepresentation can pierce the heart of the other person'."
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:9
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Matthew 11:28-30
"Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know"
