Meteorologically speaking, if Rain could have predicted his spectacular rise since his debut in 2002, he would have surely named himself "Typhoon" or "Hurricane." In less than four years, Rain has not only swept through Korea, but also most of Asia, leaving behind a trail of jaw-dropping musical and acting successes and swooning female fans.
So what is it about Rain?
Some say it is the mesmerizing combination of his angelic face and Adonis-like body. Others say it the irresistible juxtaposition of his breathtakingly powerful onstage performance and his boyish charms and humility offstage. Cynics may want to say that he is a calculated product of the star-making machinery that has made the most out of Hallyu (Korean Wave, which refers to the popularity of Korean pop culture throughout East and Southeast Asia). Maybe the secret behind Rain's success is much simpler: hard work, talent, and charisma. Whatever is at the eye of the storm, Rain is an undeniable force to be reckoned with.
From Bi to Rain
Before he was the Asian superstar Rain, he was the Korean singer Bi (pronounced "bee" meaning "rain" in Korean). Bi debuted in 2002 with Nappun Namja (Bad Guy), which was followed by another hit album, How to Avoid the Sun (2003). He was also the Korean actor Jung Ji-Hoon, who got his first acting role starring as a troubled but loyal and generous gigolo in a Korean TV drama, Sangdoo-ya, Hakgyo Gaja (Sangdoo, Let's Go to School).
It was his second TV drama role that transformed the Korean actor/singer into an Asian megastar. Life did imitate TV for Rain, as he played the role of a popular Asian actor in Full House (2004), which regularly captured over 30 percent of the viewing audience per episode, with an average viewer rating of over 40 percent for the entire series. The enormous domestic success of Full House continued on as an Asian phenomenon when the drama was aired beyond Korea's borders in countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan. His third album, It's Raining was released in late 2004 and made its way to other Asian nations in 2005, creating a perfect synergy with the sensation that Full House had become.
Real Hunger
Would this have been something that a sixth grade boy, who had just caught the dancing bug, could have imagined? Rain, too, has had a history of trials and tribulations befitting any major star. He did not leave home for the city to pursue his dreams with nothing but a few thousand won in his pockets; however, that was only because he already happened to be in Seoul. Another reason is that he probably did not even have a few thousand won to his name when the going got very tough just a couple of years before his big break.
Running only on the euphoria that dancing provided him, he tried to befriend some of the professional dancers in his neighborhood, only to be beaten and have his winter jacket stolen. He then tried his luck at various entertainment companies. All 18 companies he tried out at gave him the boot, citing, would you believe it, his appearance as the reason. They said he was too tall (185 centimeters) and too ugly! It should be noted that for a long time one Korean standard of beauty has been double eyelids, which Rain, along with most East Asians, lacks. Many Koreans, celebrities and ordinary people alike, undergo cosmetic surgery to add creases to their eyelids; in fact, many Korean women see it as a rite of passage, undergoing the procedure during the winter vacation right before entering university. Rain, in addition to other members of a new generation of Korean stars who opted not to go under the knife and stand proud and single-lidded, has changed the public perception somewhat regarding the Korean aesthetic obsession with double eyelids.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:9
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Matthew 11:28-30
"Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know"
